Instructors
Christian Burns
Christian Burns has been choreographing, teaching and performing for more than 30 years. His pursuit for finding meaning and purpose through dance has yielded a dynamic range of interdisciplinary dance works for stage, video and visual art. Known as an improviser as well as a choreographer, he strives, through any means necessary, to conjure glimpses into the wonder and fragility of the human condition.
Megan Joy Chapman
Megan Joy Chapman has been teaching dance for most of her adult life. In addition to teaching, she is a choreographer, director, and mentor. She studied classical ballet, jazz, and modern with The Franklin School for the Performing Arts, and ballet with Walnut Hill and The Boston Ballet School. Megan is a guest artist with YWAM School of Dance Studies at The University of the Nations in Kona, as well as Saving Grace Dance Ensemble in New Hampshire, where she has contributed choreography, as well as performed at Gibney Dance Center in New York City. Megan occasionally leads worship dance and workshops in various ministries.
Alana Heuer-Salazar
Alana Heuer-Salazar began dancing at the age of 11 at West Hawaii Dance Theatre under the instruction of Virginia Holte. By age 15, she began teaching ballet and hip hop, choreographing small pieces for local productions, while also performing. Exploring dance further as a young adult, Alana began modern ballet and dance improvisation. During college, Alana studied modern dance with Monte Black at the University of Northern Colorado. She performed many original, choreographed productions and worked with innovative guest artists including, Jacob Mora and Christy O’Connell-Black.
Virginia Holte
Virginia Holte founded West Hawaii Dance Theatre and serves as artistic director. A graduate of the Academy of the Washington Ballet under the late Mary Day, Virginia enjoyed a long professional dance career with Indianapolis Ballet Theatre, Chicago Ballet, Washington Ballet and various guest appearances with Ballet Internationale, New Jersey Ballet, and Indiana Ballet Theatre N.W.
Jenna Ojeda
Jenna Ojeda grew up studying ballet and jazz at West Hawaii Dance Theatre. She also studied at Ballet Hawaii and 24/7 Dance Studio on Oahu. After graduating from Kealakehe High School, Jenna moved to San Diego where she received a degree in dance. After college, she studied at The Academy of Performing Arts in San Diego, as well as EDGE studio in Los Angeles. On returning to Kona, Jenna also returned to WHDT and has been teaching for more than 10 years.
Midori Satoh
Choreographer, teacher and dancer, Midori Satoh was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. Midori toured extensively with Shapiro & Smith Dance Company and performed around the world. She has choreographed ballet, contemporary, musical theatre, and competition pieces. She began her teaching career in high school and has enjoyed teaching at West Hawaii Dance Theatre for more than 20 years.
Emilie Skinner
Emilie Skinner began her classical training at the age of six. While the primary focus of her training is classical ballet, she also has experience in modern, jazz and contemporary dance. After graduating fro college, she joined Ballet Dallas and also performed with DGDG (Danielle Georgiou Dance Group) and other North Texas dance companies. Emilie has taught and choreographed for ABA, the Conservatory of Ballet in San Leandro, Oakland Ballet, San Francisco Youth Ballet Theatre, and Berkeley City Ballet.
