The West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy will present “The Sleeping Beauty Ballet” at Kahilu Theatre on May 30. Curtains lift at 2:30 p.m.

The ballet is based on the original scenario devised by the great Russian choreographer, Marius Petipa in 1890. More than 60 West Hawaii Dance Academy dancers ages 3 and up will bring to life the enchanting story of Princess Aurora, bewitched by the evil Carabosse and placed along with her kingdom into a deep and protective sleep by the benevolent Lilac Fairy, to be awakened by her noble Prince whose kiss breaks the spell.

In four swiftly moving scenes, the drama and excitement of this classic tale are enhanced by the fluid pacing and continuing development of characters. Audience members will be mesmerized by the sumptuous costumes, background, and brilliant classical ballet performed by our local artists.

The story is narrated by Barbara Pritchard, who will be accompanied by Megumi Kopp on piano. The performance is choreographed by Virginia Holte, Midori Satoh, Jenna Power, Megan Chapman and Claire “Miss Kitty” Hollinger.

During intermission, a silent auction to benefit the nonprofit West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy will be held.

Tickets are $27/$22/$17/$12 and can be purchased online at kahilutheatre.org. Contact West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy at 329-8876 for more information.
